DENSO associates cleanup for Trails Day
Date: 1999-06-03 On June 5, 1999, volunteers from DENSO Manufacturing Michigan, Inc. (DMMI) will clean nature trails at Fort Custer Recreation Area in observance of National Trails Day.
National Trails Day, originated in 1993 by the American Hiking Society, is celebrated annually on the first Saturday in June. The goal: Raise awareness of trails and create support for trail maintenance year-round.
Organized by DENSO’s Wildlife and Conservation Committee (WCC), DMMI associates, friends and family members will clean trails for four hours to help maintain hiking and biking trails in an effort to raise environmental awareness in the community.
Joan Thompson, WCC member and DMMI event organizer, says National Trails Day is a good way to promote local trail systems as a good source of family recreation. “I hope this will allow the WCC to experience the effort needed to maintain a trail and to increase awareness that we all need to contribute to environmental improvements for future generations,” she says.
DENSO’s Wildlife and Conservation Committee began in 1998 and to date has focused on associates’ environmental education. Its additional activities include monitoring on-site bluebird nest boxes with a Kalamazoo Nature Center biologist; a wildlife photo contest; participation in Earth Day; and future development of an on-site Michigan native wildflower garden.
DENSO’s environmental achievements include:
· ISO 14001 certification - An international standard focused on documenting and decreasing environmental impacts.
· Michigan Business Pollution Prevention Partnership - A voluntary state program to encourage businesses to initiate and/or expand pollution prevention practices and provide recognition for those efforts.
· Clean Corporate Citizen designation - A voluntary state program awarding businesses which adopt a strong environmental management system, a facility-specific pollution prevention program and have a consistent record of compliance with applicable environmental requirements. DMMI was only the tenth site in Michigan to earn this designation.
