DENSO receives volunteer award
Date: 2001-05-01
DENSO Manufacturing Michigan, Inc. received the 2001 Sharon J. Olson Memorial Character Award at the annual Spotlight on Character celebration, sponsored by the Battle Creek Family Y Center and Character Unlimited.
The DENSO Breakfast Club was nominated by Margaret A. Trunick, director of Community and Volunteer Services at Veterans Administration Medical Center, for providing breakfast twice a month for patients in the Palliative Care Unit.
In her letter of nomination, Trunick wrote: "Because the focus of palliative care is to promote the patient's comfort and maintain function for as long as possible, DENSO volunteers help accomplish the unit's mission. The ‘just-like-home’ aroma of frying bacon spreads throughout the unit and complements the wide variety of breakfast foods, such as eggs, pancakes, toast, juice and coffee. Veterans simply cannot turn down these breakfasts. The fellowship between the veterans and volunteers enjoying the conversation and a good meal is apparent even to the casual observer.”
The award is named for Sharon J. Olson who was the director of training at Character Unlimited until her life was tragically cut short in December. Three of the DENSO Breakfast Club volunteers were on hand Friday, May 4, to receive the award. They are Alan Schneider, Brian Seibert and Amy Williams.
