DMMI Given Longevity Award from C3
Date: 2004-11-20

BATTLE CREEK, Mich.--DENSO Manufacturing Michigan, Inc. has received a Longevity Award from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. The award recognizes the company as a five-year Clean Corporate Citizen (C3).

The C3 program was established in 1997 and built on the “concept that Michigan businesses that have consistently demonstrated a strong environmental ethic and stewardship can be relied on to carry out their environmental protection responsibilities without rigorous oversight,” according to the MDEQ. The C3 program requires environmental performance in three areas: environmental management systems, pollution prevention and environmental compliance.

Participation in the C3 program is voluntary. The yearly evaluations are based upon progress in pollution prevention. In 2003, DMMI reported the following progress in pollution prevention:

• Landfill waste decreased, with over 80% of the waste generated not being sent to into landfills.

• Lead was removed from in-house manufactured products

• Hexavalent chromium was eliminated as a surface treatment chemical.

• Cardboard recycling increased and was up to 3.74 million pounds.

The two other areas for evaluation are environmental management systems and environmental compliance. DMMI’s environmental management system meets the criteria for IS 14001certification and the company is evaluated annually by the MDEQ for compliance. Participation in the C3 program is voluntary.

Benefits to C3 companies include a shorter waiting period for receiving necessary permits, more flexibility and reduced monitoring, according to Mike Myszka, Section Leader, Environmental Engineering, Risk Management Department.

DMMI was among the first C3s. In March of this year, the 100th organization received C3 recognition. The C3s organizations in the state range from vehicle/parts manufacturing, furniture making, paper production and office management to research and development, power generation and natural gas transmission.

DMMI also is a member of Michigan Business Pollution Prevention Partnership. On the national level, DMMI is a charter member of EPA Performance Track which mirrors the C3 program.
