DENSO gives trees, tune-ups for Earth Day
Date: 1999-04-17 DENSO MANUFACTURING MICHIGAN, INC. (DMMI) is celebrating Earth Day, April 22, by giving its associates jack pine tree seedlings and a chance at winning free automobile tune-ups.
DENSO’s Wildlife and Conservation Committee (WCC) will begin Earth Day activities by offering jack pine seedlings to all associates. Associates have the choice of keeping and planting their tree, or adding it to the additional 200 trees the committee is donating to Michigan State University Kellogg Forest’s jack pine/kirtland warbler project in Grayling, Michigan.
Activities will continue at DMMI with a Dirty Sock Contest. Associates will have the opportunity to participate by placing a clean sock over their car’s exhaust tail pipe and running their car for 30 seconds. The result: They will be able to determine the quality and amount of emissions from their automobile and the five associates with the dirtiest exhaust, as determined by the WCC, will earn a free tune-up. All other associates will be entered into drawings for other environmentally-conscious prizes.
DENSO’s Wildlife and Conservation Committee began in 1998 and to date has focused on associates’ environmental education. Its additional activities include monitoring on-site bluebird nest boxes with a Kalamazoo Nature Center biologist; a wildlife photo contest; participation in Pollution Prevention Week (Sept. 21-27 ); and future development of an on-site Michigan native wildflower garden.
DENSO’s environmental achievements include:
· ISO 14001 certification - An international standard focused on documenting and decreasing environmental impacts.
· Michigan Business Pollution Prevention Partnership - A voluntary state program to encourage businesses to initiate and/or expand pollution prevention practices and provide recognition for those efforts.
· Clean Corporate Citizen designation - A voluntary state program awarding businesses which adopt a strong environmental management system, a facility-specific pollution prevention program and have a consistent record of compliance with applicable environmental requirements. DMMI was only the tenth site in Michigan to earn this designation.
DMMI president Jim Tsuboi says DMMI is proud of its proactive approach to environmental education. “We feel it is our responsibility to educate our associates and surpass mere compliance activities at our plant. We realize that we must focus on all aspects of the environment,” Tsuboi says.
